1. IMPROPER DIETARY HABITS
Excessive intake of guru (heavy), snigdha (unctuous), abhishyandi (channel-blocking) foods.
Inadequate intake of medhya (nervine tonic) dravyas such as ghrita and shatavari.
Improper food combinations and incompatible food (Viruddha Ahara).
2. IMPROPER LIFESTYLE (VIHAR)
Overexertion, excessive sexual activity leading to Majja kshaya.
Suppression of natural urges like sleep and emotions.
Lack of proper rest and recovery, disturbing Majja Dhatu formation.
3. CHRONIC DISEASES AND DHATU KSHAYA
Long-standing Asthi Dhatu Kshaya (bone tissue depletion) leads to improper formation of Majja Dhatu.
Debilitating illnesses causing depletion of Ojas and Dhatus can eventually affect Majjavaha Srotas.
4. AGEING AND DEGENERATION
Natural ageing reduces Majja Dhatu, leading to degeneration of srotas.
Vata predominance in old age increases susceptibility to Majja-related disorders.
5. MENTAL STRESS AND TRAUMA
Psychological disturbances, chronic stress, depression, and emotional trauma directly impact Majja Srotas, which are related to the brain and nervous system.
Constant fear, grief, and worry can lead to Majja Dushti.
6. INJURY OR PHYSICAL TRAUMA
Injury to the vertebral column, brain, or nerves can cause direct damage to Majjavaha Srotas.
Fractures or surgical interventions can disrupt normal Majja circulation.
In modern medical understanding, Majjavaha Srotas can be correlated to the central and peripheral nervous systems, bone marrow, and related structures. Contemporary etiologies include:
1. NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS
Diseases like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, and peripheral neuropathies.
Demyelination and nerve degeneration can be understood as Majja Dushti.
2. BONE MARROW SUPPRESSION OR FAILURE
Conditions such as aplastic anemia, leukemia, and bone marrow fibrosis impact Majja Srotas directly.
3. LIFESTYLE DISORDERS
High stress jobs, digital overload, lack of rest/sleep (chronic insomnia) cause nervous exhaustion and Majja Kshaya.
Substance abuse (alcohol, drugs) damages the nervous system and bone marrow.
4. DEFICIENCY DISORDERS
Vitamin B12 deficiency, calcium deficiency, and iron-deficiency anemia affect Majja health and nerve function.
5. RADIATION AND CHEMOTHERAPY
Exposure to radiation and cytotoxic drugs severely affect bone marrow and nerve tissues.
1. VATA DUSHTI IN MAJJAVAHA SROTAS
Symptoms: Tremors, body stiffness, tingling sensation, numbness, hypersensitivity, insomnia.
Cause: Vata aggravation leads to degeneration, dryness, and loss of coordination.
2. PITTA DUSHTI IN MAJJAVAHA SROTAS
Symptoms: Burning sensation in nerves, inflammation, irritability, anger, disturbed mental function.
Cause: Pitta vitiation leads to inflammation and nerve irritation.
3. KAPHA DUSHTI IN MAJJAVAHA SROTAS
Symptoms: Heaviness of head, lethargy, slow nerve responses, dullness in senses and intellect.
Cause: Kapha increase leads to blockages and poor conduction in nerve tissues.
As per Charaka Samhita, Majjavaha Srotas are seated in Asthi (bones) and Majja (marrow). Their damage or vitiation shows the following symptoms:
1. MOH (DELUSION OR CONFUSION)
2. MURCHHA (FAINTING)
3. VIBHRAMA (DELIRIUM, LOSS OF COORDINATION OR BALANCE)
4. BHRAMA (VERTIGO)
5. PAIN IN BONE-MARROW REGIONS (MAJJA ASHRITA SHULA)
6. STAMBHA (STIFFNESS IN BODY PARTS)
7. SENSORY LOSS OR HYPERSENSITIVITY
8. COGNITIVE DECLINE AND MEMORY LOSS
"मोहः मूर्छा विवेचश्च भ्रमश्चापि प्रवर्तते।
दुःखं चास्यास्ति मज्जास्थिष्विति मज्जावहस्रोतसः॥"
(Charaka Samhita, Vimana Sthana 5/9)
Meaning:
Delusion (moha), unconsciousness (murchha), dizziness (bhrama), and severe pain in bones and marrow are the signs of Majjavaha Srotas vitiation.
